Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.

This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a possible escape.

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his health and for the return of democracy in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also asked that he be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he needed ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which included plans to murder his opponent and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. Lula was took office without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, many his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.

The law enforcement took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, restore order and return him to office.

At the period, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
